Transfer Data to Your New iPhone
It's time for a new phone and that means transferring all your data from your old phone to your new phone. Thankfully, this process has gotten much easier than it used to be. Just make sure to avoid any disruptions by either having both your phones charged over 50% or plugged in before beginning. This will ensure neither device dies while you are transferring information between them. The images you see below may not exactly match what you see on your screen, but they should all generally be somewhere around the same idea.
(In this article, if there are two phones in the picture then the new one is on the right and the old one is on the left)
1. Turn on your new iPhone by holding down the power button until the Apple logo appears. It will load for a second and then land you on a colorful moving screen with the word "Hello" in different languages. Go ahead and swipe up from the bottom of the screen to reach the language selection screen. Once there, select the language you prefer. Next, it will bring you to the region selection screen. Select United States for this one.
2. Next, it will ask whether you would like to keep the default appearance of the text and icons on your phone. You can set this to your preference and then press Continue. It will now take you to a screen labelled Quick Start with instructions to bring your old device close to the new one. With the old device unlocked and placed next to the new one, a screen will popup on the old device labelled Setup New iPhone. Select Continue for this.
3. Your old device will request that you enter the passcode for it again. Once you have entered it, the new phone will display a spinning blue aura and your old phone will have a circle with your camera in the center of it. Place the aura in the center of the circle and it will scan it to confirm the pairing.
4. Once the devices have confirmed the pairing with each other, the new iPhone will display a black screen with the words "Continue on your other iPhone". On the old iPhone, click the button that is labelled Set Up for Me. Now the old phone will have the words "Finish on new iPhone". On the new iPhone, enter your old phones passcode.
5. The new iPhone will now go black and display the words "It may take a few minutes to activate your iPhone." Once this process completes, it will display a blurb of text regarding Data & Privacy, select Continue on this screen. Next will be a Face ID screen. You may either take the time now to set it up or do it later.
(Please ignore the smudges)
6. Once you have either setup Face ID or hit Set Up Later, you will be presented with a screen that has two choices. Select the lower one that is labelled Transfer from iPhone. This will take you to a Terms & Conditions screen. You may read them if you want, but for this article we will just hit Agree. It will now display the Apple logo with dots and app icons flashing around it as it loads some information.
7. Once it is done loading, you will be presented with a screen titled "Make This Your New iPhone", select the button labelled Continue. For Location Services, select Turn On Location Services. For Apple Pay, you can either set this up now or select Set Up Later.
8. Next, decide whether to setup Siri now or later once your data is transferred. Both phone will now show screens with progress bars and statements saying they are transferring data. While this is happening, leave them be until they are complete. Once it is done, your new iPhone will restart and your old iPhone will show the transfer complete screen.
9. Finally, your new iPhone has all the data transferred over and will begin installing your apps and allowing you to use the other features of your phone while you wait. Your old iPhone will now give you the choice to delete all of your data or to wait a bit. If you are ready now, select continue and erase all your old data. Otherwise, once you are ready go to Settings and search for the word Erase. Then, select Erase All Content and Settings and follow the instructions it gives you. Make sure to get any ABD owned devices back to IT so that they can handle them appropriately.
