Unable to use Microphone and/or Camera within Teams Meeting
If you are in a Teams meeting and find yourself unable to use your microphone and/or camera, here are some common troubleshooting steps to help you determine the cause...
1. The first thing to start with (if the issue is only with the camera) is to check if a shutter is covering the camera. Some laptops come with built-in camera shutters, and it is typically red when covering the camera. You will just have to slide this over if this is the case.
2. If a camera shutter is not your issue, the next best thing to check would be your privacy settings. To do so, navigate to the windows start menu and search for privacy settings.
Once within these privacy settings, select the camera tab under the "App permissions" menu on the left, and make sure "Allow apps to access your camera" is turned on (highlighted in red below). You will need to do the same for the Microphone tab if you are unable to use your microphone; double check that the toggle is "On" for that as well.
3. If you are still experiencing issues with your camera/microphone after updating these privacy settings, open up the teams application, click the three dots in the top right, and select Settings.
Once within the settings menu, navigate to devices and check that the selected microphone is correct. For example, if you were trying to use the microphone built-in to your laptop, you would not want something like your Air Pods or any other headphones/Bluetooth microphone to be selected. Scrolling to the bottom of this Device tab, you will see that there is an option to select which camera is in use too (if you are just using the built in camera, there will likely only be that one choice, which may say something like "USB Video Device"). Pressing the "Make a test call" button will allow you to test and see if the microphone/camera issues have been resolved as well.
If you are already in a meeting and wish to troubleshoot your microphone, select More Options (the three dots) > Settings > Device Settings. Under Microphone, make sure the correct microphone is selected and that the device is unmuted.
4. If you continue to have issues with either your microphone or camera after following the steps above, it is possible that there may be a hardware failure preventing your camera/mic from functioning.
